What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are short text tags appended to a URL that tell your analytics platform where a visitor came from and why. When someone clicks a UTM-tagged link, Google Analytics (or any analytics tool) reads those tags and attributes the visit to the correct campaign, source, and medium.

Without UTM tags, most of your marketing traffic shows up as "direct" or "unattributed" in reports. This makes it impossible to measure which campaigns are driving results and where to allocate budget.

• Always use lowercase. UTM parameters are case-sensitive. Mixing "Facebook" and "facebook" creates duplicate entries in reports.
• Use underscores instead of spaces. Spaces get encoded as %20 in URLs, making them harder to read. Use underscores (spring_sale) or hyphens (spring-sale).
• Create a naming convention document. Share a spreadsheet with your team listing approved values for source, medium, and campaign names. Consistency is critical for clean data.
• Never use UTM tags on internal links. Adding UTM parameters to links within your own site overwrites the original attribution data, making your analytics inaccurate.
• Keep campaign names descriptive but short. Use a pattern like [year]_[campaign]_[variant]: 2026_spring_sale_email_v2.
