What Makes a Great CTA?

The words you choose for your CTA tap into specific psychological triggers. Understanding these can help you write copy that resonates with your audience.

  • Loss aversion. People are more motivated to avoid losing something than to gain something new. "Don't miss out" and "Before it sells out" leverage this bias.
  • Social proof. Phrases like "Join 10,000+ businesses" signal that others have already made this decision, reducing perceived risk.
  • The word "free." It remains one of the most powerful words in marketing. "Start free" outperforms "Get started" in nearly every A/B test because it eliminates the biggest objection: cost.
  • Specificity. "Join in 30 seconds" is more convincing than "Join now" because it sets a concrete expectation. Specific claims feel more credible than vague ones.
  • Ownership language. "Start my free trial" outperforms "Start a free trial" because possessive language creates a sense of ownership before the user even clicks.

  • E-commerce. Focus on immediacy and scarcity. "Add to cart," "Shop now," and "Get yours today" drive quick purchase decisions.
  • Professional services. Emphasize consultation and expertise. "Book a free consultation" and "Get a custom quote" work because the sale happens in conversation.
  • Content and media. Highlight value and exclusivity. "Get the free guide" and "Subscribe for weekly tips" focus on what the reader will gain.
  • Local businesses. Make it easy to take the next step. "Book your appointment," "Call now," and "Get directions" connect online interest to offline action.
